本研究は、作用素論と作用素代数論を体系的に研究し、いくつかの堺界分野へ応用することを目的とした。具体的には、作用素論については、スペクトル解析、作用素の方程式・不等式を研究し、微分方程式、ポテンシャル論などへの応用を目指した。作用素代数論については、von Neumann代数上の非可換積分論、エントロピ-論、指数理論などを研究した。以下に本研究で得られた主要な成果を述べる。1.日合は、相対エントロピ-とそのいくつかの類似な量についての漸近理論を展開し、相対エントロピ-と量子論的な仮設検定理論における漸近的な誤り確率との関係を明らかにした。また、条件付エントロピ-および力学的エントロピ-との関連で、von Neumann代数とその部分代数との間の指数理論を研究し、一定の成果を収めた。2.荷見は、単位円板上のBergmanクラスの堺界となる超関数の空間上で、Toeplitz作用素を定義し、それが有界であるためのシンボルの判定条件を導出した。3.田村は、3体系Schrodinger作用素に対して変分法に基づくEfimov効果を証明し、また単距離型ポテンシャルをもつSchrodinger作用素の漸近的完全性の別証を与えた。4.堀内は、相対容量の基本的な性質を微分方程式の手法を用いて導出した。また、重み付きSobolev空間における埋め込み定理を与え、重み付き等周不等式の一般化に成功した。5.松田は、ある種の半群環に対して、ランクと生成元の個数についての判定条件を与えた。6.大塚は、Tits計量に関してある条件を満たす理想堺界をもつ多様体の性質を調べた。
