Co-operative Research on the Fundamental Problems in the Natural Disaster Science

Considering the recent severe rainstorm disaster at Kagoshima and several earthquake disasters in northern Japan and in Hanshin-Awaji district, through the discussion in this study, the importance was put to the future research projects concerning with the urban anti-seismicsystems and the prediction of the meso-scale atomospheric phenomena among others. Two research projects have been proposed as the possible themes of Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Priority Areas. We sponsored the 30th and 31st symposium on the natural disaster science at Tokyo and Matsuyama, respectively, and the results of the research conducted in recent several years were critically reviewed and the future course of action in the natural disaster science was discussed. Five volumes of the Journal of the Natural Disaster Science were published in those two years which contained several results obtained by the Grant-in-Aid for natural disaster science. One volume was the special issue for the Hanshin-Awaji earthquake disaster.Our plan to inform our major research fruits to the general public was adopted and implemented on the occasion of the 9th symposium of the "University and Science" under the complehensive title of "Natural Disaster and Its mitigation in the Regional Society". The bibliographic data base "SAIGAI" was enriched. Eleven research groupes for the sporadic disasters had been dispatched to the various areas abroad as well as domestic. Respective research results have been published as the booklets. The plan to reorganize the Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto Unversity to strengthen the network among the institutions in the natural disaster research has been discussed.
