単語の認知が文脈により促進されることは、すでに多くの実験的研究から明らかになっている。言うまでもなく、単語は文章などの文脈中で用いられるので、これらの研究から得られた知見は日常の「読み」を強く反映していると考えられる。本研究の目的は、単語認知のどの段階で文脈が作用するのかを多義語を用いて明らかにすることである。例えば、「頭」には、身体の一部としての頭もあれば、知能という意味での頭や、ものの初めという意味もある。どの意味で用いられているかは、文脈がないと解らない。これが文脈中で用いられた場合、まず、「頭」を表すべての意味がアクセスされた後、文脈による意味の制限が行われるのか、それともアクセス前からすでに文脈により意味が制限され、適切な意味にしかアクセスされないのかということである。実験の実施にあたっては、事前に刺激に用いる単語についてその単語のもついくつかの意味の親近性を質問紙調査した。刺激として用いられる多義語は、その第1の意味と第2の意味の親近性の差ができるだけ少ないものを用いた。実験では、視覚的に提示される多義語(例えば、頭)を含んだ文の提示時間中に、その文脈に適合する意味を持つ多義語の関連語(例えば、成績)を適切・関連条件のターゲット語として提示する。文の提示開始からターゲット語の提示開始までの時間およびプライム語とターゲット語の関係を独立変数とし、ターゲット語に対する語彙判断時間を従属変数とした。ターゲット語としてはこのほか、不適切・関連条件(例えば、帽子)や、無関連条件(例えば、机)の単語を用いた。その結果提示時間の遅延とともに不適切・関連条件に抑制効果が傾向として認めらた。
