本研究において、明・朝鮮側史料と国内大名・寺院文書を収集し、主に文禄講和の交渉期における豊臣政権の指向を探った。朝鮮側史料「宣祖実録」・「再造藩邦志」等の記録から、朝鮮政府が明・日本両国からどういう情報を収集し検討を加え、どのように評価しているかを把握し、日・明両国の発給文書の文言上には表れない講和期の三国間情勢を明らかにした。そして、その状況から、逆に国内の無年号文書の年次比定を行うことが可能となり、明宮廷の冊封決定に応じた秀吉の政策を具体的に跡づけることができた。その結果、秀吉の意図する東アジア政権構想と奉仕衆・禅僧の企画する対外政策を比較し、不可解あるいは「突如として決裂」と言われてきた文禄講和決裂が、この拮抗が崩れたことによることを明らかにした。すなわち、豊臣政権は、その成立事情から、政権外の地域はすべて「豊臣化」する必要があり、政権の埒外の「外国」の存在を認めることができにくい特質を有してした。明に対しては、奉仕衆・西笑承兌らは、従来的な対中国意識と現実の戦況悪化から、明征服構想を秀吉に断念させた。そして豊臣政権による対明貿易統制をするために名目上明の冊封を受けることを認めさせた。しかし朝鮮に対しては、秀吉は政権への服属の証としての王子入質に固執し、奉仕衆も朝鮮侵略を否定することはしなかった。ここに、日本側の持つ対明意識と対朝鮮意識の明確な違いが認められる。従来秀吉の侵略研究において、朝鮮と明は必ずしも峻別されて来なかったが、朝鮮と明に対する認識の差を生ぜしめた原因を今後の課題としたい。
