本研究の主要な成果について記す。1.現代日本語の文法研究に欠かすことのできない良質の用例を大量に得るために、電子化コーパスを利用する方法を開発・改良した。当研究代表者はすでに前年度、『朝日新聞記事データベースCD-HIASK』(紀伊国屋書店・日外アソシエ-ツ)の特定の年次の版から語句を検索するためのソフトウェアを試作し成功を収めていたが、本研究においては、それに改良を加え、同データベースの任意の年次の版から語句をより高速に検索できるようにした。日本語研究における電子化コーパスの利用は世界的に見てはなはだしく立ち遅れており、本研究の成果はそうした状況に対する大きな貢献を意味するものである。2.上記の手段を利用して、現代日本語の述語否定形の用法の実態について詳細な調査・分析を行った。一般の文法書では、「〜です」の否定形を「〜ではありません」とすることが慣例化しているが、現実には「〜ではないです」の形もしばしば用いられる。記述的な文法が現実の用法を見もしないで結論を下すべきでないことは言うまでもない。本研究では、上記のデータベースから否定刑の用例数万例を採取し、形式の使い分けに関わる諸要因を種々の角度から解明した。
