建築の設計は,単なる構造物の組み立て作業ではなく,人間と環境の関係(たとえば,そこでどう振舞うことができ,周囲の物理的社会的環境とどのような関係をとることができるか)を構築することでもある。この仕組は環境の質にとって極めて重要な問題であるが,従来はデザインと計画・環境心理の狭間にあって充分研究されてこなかった。このような問題意識の元に,以下の研究作業を行った。まず建築家が設計について記述した文章(論文,スケッチ含む)をデータとして,その中で,意図的あるいは無意識的に,人間と物理社会的環境の関係を具体的に表現した事例を,その表現形式,内容,設計プロセスにおけるどの段階かに注目して収集作業を行った。またこれに加えて,人間の多様な活動が想定される建物の設計課題を設定して設計実験を行ない,作業のビデオ記録とヒアリングの併用によって,建築家の文章と同様のデータを抽出した。ここで得られたデータを,表現媒体(図・言語等々),人間の活動の何が表現されているか,建築の空間構成のヴォキャブラリィとの関係の視点で,タイポロジー化した。この結果,機能の割当て,組織との対応,認識空間の領域,他者との関係,運動といった表現のタイプを見出した。
