In December 1994, discussions were carried out between the Japanese and the Korean scientists on the research project at Seoul National University, and papers published by Korean scientists were collected at several research institute in Korea. Seaweed vegetations in the intertidal zone were investigated at several sites from Kangnung to Pohang along the Korean east coast in December 1994, and also at several sites in Pusan, Chunmu and Yosu along the Korean southern coast in March 1995.Seaweed vegetations in the Korean coasts as a whole seem to have no big difference from those in the Japanese coasts, and even in the Korean southern coast they are similar to those in the Tohoku district of Japan. It should be analyzed furthermore in consideration of water temperature and some other closely related ecological environmental factors in the coastal areas of the two countries. In the southern coastal area of Korea, cultivation of such edible seaweeds as Porphyra, Undaria and Laminaria is ve … More ry popularly practised in addition to the use of natural edible seaweeds. As for the coastal benthic animals, a Japanese member of the project, Kikuchi, visited Seoul National University and had a discussion with Professor Koh and Professor Lee at the occasion of the Japan-Korea Joint Seminar for Collaborative Research on Biological sciences, and published materials were collected. Information on coastal benthic animals in Korea is rather scarce at present except for the economically important shellfish, and researches on the distribution and biodiversity of benthic animal populations seem to be deficient in Korea. However, there are big tidal flats especially in the western coast of Korea Which are quite important for the fishery production as well as for migratory birds, and therefore relatively good information is available on benthic animals in tidal flats. Information exchange and collections were carried out on the productivity of benthic animals in tidal flats. It became clear that the benthic fauna in the tidal flat near Pusan, Korea is similar to that in the tidal flat near Sendai, Japan. Less
