项目摘要

For these three years I have been working on this subject, the development of Old English verbs of motion. The aim of this study is to examine all verbs of motion in the Old English period, their function and meaning, their features peculiar to that period, and to find instances which have never been reported in previous studies.For the first year, books, articles, and computer corpora had to be collected as basic materials. From the very first year I started publishing parts of the findings either at home or abroad. Whenever I went out of the country, I read papers, examined manuscripts in libraries, and kept on collecting materials for the subject. I have been to the International Conference on English Historical Linguistics (ICEHL) twice (Edinburgh and Poznan) and International Medieval Congress at University of Leeds twice. At home I delivered papers in general meetings of the English Linguistic Society of Japan three times in succession, in the Kyoto Conference on English Historical Linguistics and Philology, and in the Japan Society for Medieval English Studies. I read 5 papers at home, 4 abroad, wrote 16 articles (6 of which have already been published), one book and three joint works. The results will be incorporated into a book entitled The Development of the Verbs of Motion in Medieval English and will be published from the U.K.in the near future.

这三年来，我一直在研究这个课题，即古英语运动动词的发展。本研究的目的是考察古英语时期所有的运动动词，它们的功能和意义，以及它们在那个时期所特有的特征，并发现前人研究中从未报道过的实例。从第一年起，我开始在国内外发表部分研究结果。每当我走出国门，我阅读报纸，在图书馆检查手稿，并继续收集材料的主题。我曾两次参加英国历史语言学国际会议（ICEHL）（爱丁堡和波兹南），两次参加利兹大学的国际中世纪大会。在国内，我连续三次在日本英语语言学会的大会上发表论文，一次是在京都英语历史语言学和语言学会议上，另一次是在日本中世纪英语研究学会上。我在国内读了5篇论文，在国外读了4篇，写了16篇文章（其中6篇已经出版），出了一本书，三部合著作品。研究结果将被编入一本名为《中世纪英语运动动词的发展》的书中，并将在不久的将来在U.K.in上出版。
