文書作成のための計算機支援環境、特に文書作成の「上流」工程にあたる主題の選定や材料集め、構成づくりといった作業を支援する計算機環境の実現を行なった。1 まず、文書作成時の主題の選定、並びに、材料集め作業の支援に必須の「カード探索」機能を付加した。カード操作ツールは、広い机を計算機上にシミュレートしている。したがって、計算機画面上には、机上に広げられた多くのカードの一部しか表示できない。こうした状況で、見たいカードをすぐ探し出せるような「カード探索」機能を不可欠である。2 いわゆる「ハイパー・テキスト」型の連結情報をもった「カード・文書交換」機能を付加した。これは、単にカード上のテキストを文書作成用エディタにそのまま複写するだけの機能ではなく、複写するとともに、複写されたテキスト間を関係付けておくものである。これにより、例えば、その一方が後に修正されたとき、地方も自動的に修正されているというような処理が実現できる。3 文書の構成づくりの支援ツールとして、「構成表エディタ」を開発した。構成表とは、多くのカードに散在している情報を、一つの文書にまとめる際の「構成」を検討するための図解である。構成表エディタの実現においては、特に既存ツールとの整合性に留意し、統合環境としての使い勝手(ユーザ・インタフェイス)の良さを保持するよう留意した。4 文書作成に欠かせない「校正」作業を行なうための支援機能を設計、実現した。ここで、「校正」作業とは、一般に印刷段階で行なわれる誤植などを訂正する作業ではなく、執筆者自身が、文章をよりよくするために、「読みかえす」作業や、文書作成技術教育における指導者による「添削」作業をさす。例えば、ワープロで作成した文書を印刷し、赤エンピツをもって、修正していく作業である。
