東京近郊と全国各地にある難病をもつ子どもの親の会の役員に会い、インタビューを行い、またこれまでつくられた会の発行雑誌等を集め、分析した。会は、1960年代から活動をはじめすでに5000人以上の会員を集めているものから、つい最近できたもので会員も数十名のところがあり、差が大きい。個人の居宅を離れた事務局をもつところの発展は著しい。逆に、会長がひとり献身的な活動を行っているところは、会長にまかせきりで活動が停滞している。会の活動の中心は、夏のキャンプにあり、キャンプは、子どものケアに追われる親たちがボランティアに子どもをまかせてゆっくりと話し合える貴重な機会になっている(逆にいえば、キャンプ以外での日常的な交流は、他のセルフヘルプグループに比べて少ない)。本研究者はそのキャンプに参加し、観察をおこなったが、会員自信は気づいていない親子関係の相互点検などの機能があることを発見した。会同士の交流はまだはじまったばかりであり、会としての方針が出せないでいるところもある。また、ボランティアについての認識も低く、障害者団体との交流も少ない。稀少難病の治療法開発という点で、医師との連携が不可欠である。医師等、専門職との関係は一般に密接であり、一部の会を除いて専門職は厚い信頼を得ている。会の中心を担う役員の人材不足にどの会も悩んでおり、発展が停滞している一番の原因はそこにある。本研究の協力機関である日本児童家庭文化協会への期待は大きい。とくに、行政中央機関(厚生省)とのつながりについては、全面的に依存している会もある。
