项目摘要

断酒会、断酒友の会、断酒修養会という3つの異なる流れにある自助組織と関係をつくることができた。断酒会の全国大会や「断酒学校」と呼ばれる集中研修にも参加し、参与観察を行った。また日本禁酒同盟の事務局に保存してある戦前からの膨大な資料を探索する機会を得て、また断酒友の会の記録を分析することによって、断酒会の組織的起源について深く知ることができた。それにより従来、AAの活動からヒントを得て断酒会の活動が始められたとされていたが、戦前までの禁酒運動の影響などが現在の断酒会に残っており、その発展のプロセスは非常に複雑であることがわかった。自助組織をいかに研究するかという方法論が文化によって異なる可能性に気づき、その方法論的な議論を昨年度、米国カリフォルニア州で開かれた国際会議Society for Community Research & Actionにて米国の研究者と共に発表した(Challenges of Conducting Cross-Cultural Research With Mutual Help Groups, Tomofumi Oka,Thomasina Borkman,& Richard Chenhall)。また今年7月にバルセロナで行われる国際会議The International Society for Third-Sector Researchに参加し研究成果(Research on self-help organisations in Japan:Working with a sense of duty,giri)を発表する予定である。断酒会はこれまで専らAAとの比較で論じられることが多かったが、我々が明らかにしたことは日本の他の関連団体(日本禁酒同盟など)との比較で論じること、また神道を含めた日本の宗教と関連、人の「悪」を如何に理解するか、「病」や「汚れ」の文化的な考察が断酒会の理解にとっては不可欠であるということである。欧米の伝統をもとに発達した集団療法の論理では見えにくい、集団「療法」の形もあることがわかった。また、全国に広がる断酒会が組織の公的な資料から印象づけられるような全国均一なものではないこと、外部者に開かれていない集会も多数あること、本部・支部の組織の形がヒエラルキーの形ではなく、かといって単純な連合体でもなく、独自の組織形態を維持していること、過去の経緯や地域の医療機関との関係によって活動内容や組織形態も大きく異なることがわかった。
