まず、〈研究実施計画部〉の(1)に基づいて、南朝側の皇子が地方に派遣された事例を収集した。その結果、関東において南朝軍の内部で自立的な軍事行動をとろうとする小山氏が、北畠親房に皇子の派遣を要求した顕著なように、独立性の高い有力武士が自立的な軍事行動を起こす際に、南朝皇子がその旗印として利用されたケースがあることが明かとなった。さらに、南朝皇子はそれ自身として即権威たりうるのではなく、小山氏が独自の軍事行動を放棄した時に皇子を足利側に引き渡そうとしたように、皇子をかつぐ武士の自立性が失われると、皇子の権威も失われた。以上の考察より、武士の自立性が天皇の権威を破壊するといった説や、南朝が天皇の権威を維持するため、天皇の分身として皇子を各地に送ったとする通説は、ともに事の判面しか見ておらず、皇子の派遣を要求した武士の行動からそれぞれ再検討する余地があることが明かとなった。さらに、〈2〉については、南朝側とは対照的に、足利側は天皇や皇子を戦場に出さなかった点に注目した。その理由については十分な証明にはいたらなかったが、上述の経緯から、武士の自立性と天皇の権威の結合を防ぐために、足利氏は北朝を他の武士が手出しできない、不可侵な存在して維持する方針をとったと考えられる。そして、その最後のしあげが、〈3〉義満による皇位さん奪ではなかったか、と推測した。以上考察より、(1)天皇家の分裂と全国的内乱が重なるという極めて特殊な歴史的状況の中で、天皇権威が「拡散」するという未曾有の事態が展開したこと、(2)かかる事態の収拾が室町幕府の重要な政治課題であり、この問題の解決の方法に沿って、幕府と天皇・朝廷との関係が作り上げられていったのではないか、という見通しを立てることができた。なお、本研究成果の一部は、研究辞典、書評等で活用したが、根幹部分については次年度論文として公表する計画である。
