Polymer optical fiber amplifier (POFA) is proposed and evaluated and its application is investigated.Experimentally and theoretically, the basic performance of POFA is studied. It was evaluated experimentally and by the theoretical model that an order of kilo watt of amplified signal and ASE was obtained by an order of hundred millimeter length-POFA at around 600 nm-wavelength. Especially, ASE-POFA requires pumping source only. Thus, the ASE-POFA is promising to be an easy-handling visible optical source. As one of the application of the POFA,optical source for photodynamic diagnosis (PDD) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) is proposed. Generation of the fluorescence an active oxygen from the photosensitizer excited by the POFA is detected and possibility for the PDD and PDT by the POFA is discussed. In addition, microscopic mechanism of the PDT was evaluated experimentally. Cacer killing effect and phenomena of vascular shut down (VSD) was observed for the first time with the Zinc-photosensitizer.
