平成7年度より実施した分布調査により、調査総数約600件の内54%が建築物、30%が土木施設、軍事施設が9%、港湾施設が7%の比率であった。この比率は、調査地域の性格をよく表しており、幕末から明治期にかけて建設された横須賀製鉄所・浦賀ドック等の著名な施設があり、港湾を中心とする軍事施設がよく残されている実態が浮かび上がった。特に土木施設の中でもトンネルの数量が多いばかりでなく、明治10年代のトンネルが現存利用されているのは、関東地方では最古のものである。なお、大正から昭和にかけての洋間を伴う木造庶民住宅が全体の25%を占めていたのは、意外な事実である。これらが集中する町並みが、天災・戦災から免れて現存している。調査対象が多数に上ったのみならず、年代のはっきりしている施設が多いので、近代化遺産の編年が可能となった。したがって、地域的な特徴はあるものの、全国的にみて横須賀市域は近代化遺産の宝庫であるとともに、基準を考える上で第一級の地域であることが判明した。今後、日本の近代化遺産を考える際の標準地の一つとなるであろう。また、分布リストは刊行はしていないが、情報提供はその都度実施している。
