西日本の広い地域を研究対象として、縄文文化の確立期とされる縄文時代早期の各地の遺跡から出土する石器資料のデータを収集する作業を終了した。生産に直接関わる道具であり、かつ遺跡から普遍的に得られる生業復元のための材料として、石器を選定して研究対象とした。収集データは東は三重県、南は鹿児島県までにおよび遺跡総数269件に達した。このようにして遺跡から出土した資料をもとにして、とくに石器の組成に研究の焦点を絞った。地域的あるいは時期的な石器の内容を把握した結果、明らかとなった石器組成の違いが意味する原因を考察した。収集データから得られた西日本の早期の石器群の特徴は、全体の石器組成に占める石鏃を代表とした狩猟具の卓越と、磨石や石皿など植物質食料加工道具の漸増である。これは縄文文化の開始期である草創期に始まる縄文時代的な石器揃えが、西日本においても次第に定着していった姿を示しているものであろう。しかし、各地における早期の遺跡から出土する個別の石器群の内容は、土器型式が同一ないしは並行する土器型式であっても、石器組成にかなりの差が確認できる。また一方で、土器型式の枠を越える遺跡間で共通する組成の見られる場合もある。それぞれの遺跡の立地と環境と石器組成の関係を詳細に見た場合、かなりの相関性を読みとることができる。このことは各地域あるいは遺跡の地理的立地の違いによって、集団を支える生業の内容が異なっていることの現れであり、それぞれの集団の局地的な環境への適応を進めていった縄文時代確立期の実態を示しているのではないかと考えられる。なお、それぞれの遺跡の性格が石器組成として現れる可能性があるが、西日本において遺跡の性格が明らかにし難い例が多く今後の課題としておきたい。
