本研究は、生涯スポーツを指向する体育科教育において、学習内容論構成の鍵観点となっている「特性論」を「スポーツ生活の質」という点から再検討を行なうものであった。まずこのような学習内容の「質」を考えるためには、潜在的カリキュラムという概念が非常に重要となることが明らかにされ、体育科教育研究における潜在的カリキュラム論の理論的枠組みが示された。そしてこの枠組みに則って実際の授業の事例的な調査分析が繰り返された。ここでの調査分析は解釈的パラダイムに基づく「エスノメソドロジー」の手法を大きく取り入れたものであり、このことによって顕在的に示される「学習内容」のみならず、書かれてはいないけれども実際に学ばれている「学習内容」の次元を対象化することに成功できたと考えられる。調査分析の結果、そうした潜在性の契機となる教師-生徒間の相互作用において、「離脱」「位置どり」「座標化」「文節化」「間人化」「記号化」といった固有の特徴を析出することができた。現行の「特性論」の観点はこのような相互作用性を勘案せず、個人の欲求次元を基点として構成されるものであるから、意味空間としての体育授業を基礎づけてしまうこれらの潜在的カリキュラムを隠してしまっていると考えられる。このことから、本研究の期間内における到達点として、授業の潜在性や相互作用性を視野に含んだ理論枠組みの準備とそのための実践検証が、現行体育科教育の学習内容論の展開には欠かせないものであることが明らかにされたといえる。
