本年度の研究では、(1)新聞社が行った国会議員に対するアンケート調査のデータを下にした政党間の競合空間の構造分析と、(2)この結果を下にしたゲーム理論による分析を行った。まず、第1に、朝日新聞が1994年の6月の連立政権形成の直前に国会議員に対して行った調査をデータとして、各党間の競合空間の構造を分析した。具体的には、数量化4類を用いて各党間の親近度のデータを分析し、2次元の政党間の競合空間を導き、この空間座標における各党の位置を定めた。この分析において導出された第1次元の軸は、55年体制以降のイデオロギー配置を示すものとして解釈することができる。第2次元の軸は、直前の連立政権に対する態度を示す軸として解釈することができた。第2に、この競合空間内における各政党の位置をもとに、連立政権の形成をゲーム理論で説明することを試みた。1994年6月の連立政権の形成が、ある種の驚きを持って捉えられていたにもかかわらず、この2次元の空間内における距離と政権維持に必要な議員数の2つの条件を組み合わせた効用関数を前提として、自民党・社会党・さきがけの3党による連立政権の形成が、自然な均衡として導出することができた。しかしながら、政党の競合空間における第1次元の距離と政権維持に必要な議員数との2つの条件による効用関数では、この3党の連立政権の形成は自然な均衡としては導出することができなかった。その点では、イデオロギーが隣接する最小勝利連合モデルでは説明として不十分であり、先行した連立政権に対する態度要因を組み入れる形での修正が必要である。
