本研究では、不登校児ないし、不登校傾向にある児童・生徒の学習に対する内発的動機づけを向上させる上で、学習者に課題設定を促し、設定された場合には、教師(観察者)がその達成を確認するという方法がどれほど効果的かを調べた。特に、個人別に学習達成の過程をイメージスキャナーやノート型パソコンなどを利用して、その場でコンピュータに打ち込み、ファイル化していった。一方、内発的動機づけの程度は、箱庭や質問紙を適宜実施することによって、推定した。その結果、多くの不登校児ないし不登校傾向児において、学習に対する内発的動機づけが喚起されたことを示唆する結果が得られた。しかし、ほぼすべてのケースにおいて、すぐに学習課題を設定するよりも、ゲームやスポーツ、絵画や工作、漫画や歌手についての話など、彼らの内発的動機づけがすでに喚起されている領域での相互作用を十分に行う必要があった。研究者はこのような領域も広義の学習と捉え、ファイルに記入していった。また、なかには、学習に対する動機づけを高めようとする研究者の意図に反発し、質問紙にきちんと回答しないようなケースもあった。このようなケースでは、質問紙を中止し、上述領域での相互作用の活性化を図った。すると、次第に教科学習において、達成課題を示したり、疑問点を質問するなどの行動が出現するようになった。以上の結果から、教科学習に関心を限定せず、広範な領域で知識や技能が向上すること、あるいは、作品や実績が蓄積されていくことを個人的相互作用の中で確認するアプローチが、学習に対する内発的動機づけも喚起する可能性が高いことが明らかになった。

The above results show that there is a high probability that the internal motivation of learning will be aroused in the process of learning and teaching, and that the knowledge and skills in the field will be increased in the process of learning and teaching.
