The purpose of this study is to clarify whether basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) might increase regional myocardial blood flow (Qm) at the infarcted myocardium and salvages it in the acutely infarcted myocardium in experimental animals.[Methods] In 20 mongrel dogs, 28 SD rats and 37 rabbits, the coronary artey were ligated, bFGF 300 mu g in dogs, 100 mu g in SD rats and 100 mu g in rabbits were injected respectively into the infarcted myocardium and bred for 4 weeks. Qm was measured using nonradioactive colored microsphere and the amount of viable myocardium and extent of fibrosis in the infarcted area were measured histologically.[Results] Qm was increased and viable myocardium was plenty and fibrosis was less at the infarcted area in dogs treated with bFGF.In SD rats, however, bFGF caused no change. In rabbits, the samse effects were observed at the border zone but not at the infarcted area.[Conclusion] The beneficial effects of bFGF at the infarcted area were observed only in dogs. The same effects were seen at the border zone in rabbits but no effect in SD rats. These obervations suggest that the effects of bFGF were not uniform and there are species differences in the effect of bFGF.
