今年度は、前年度の成果をもとに、初期のバクティ運動がどのような文化的・思想的背景のもとに興隆し、どのような担い手に担われ、それ以降の展開を遂げていったかについて考究した。具体的には、初期のバクティの詩人たち(7世紀から9世紀に生きたナーヤナールたちやアールヴァールたち)の出自、出身地、詩作の場所などを、各宗教詩文学作品から丹念に抜き出し、年表、地図などの具体的資料の上で跡づけ、初期のバクティ運動の経緯について、実証的に親展のあとを辿った。上の成果は、タミル語の文献を精読し、出来る限り和訳を施す作業を通じて得られたものである。この成果をもとに、1999年には、日本南アジア学会設立10周年記念叢書の一環としてインド・デリーのインド学系出版社マノーハルから刊行された、辛島昇東京大学名誉教授の編になる英文の研究書に論文を寄稿した。これは、初期のバクティが興る直前の南インド・タミルナードゥ地方の宗教事情を、古典タミル語文献をもとに考察したものである。
