本研究では享受経験による情動情報の解読技能の発達の様相を明らかにするために、古典派様式の5曲(長調3曲、短調2曲)の1つの曲ごとに3つの情動(楽、悲、怒)をピアノ演奏で伝達するよう演奏家に依頼し作成した材料を用いて、それぞれの演奏に含まれた情動を、最も当てはまる顔の絵(楽、悲、怒のそれぞれを示す)を1つ選ばせると方法で判断させた。15の演奏はいずれも、ピアノ演奏経験を積んだ2名の評定者によって、演奏者の意図したとおりの情動を表現していると評定された。実験の参加者は幼稚園児(4〜5才児32名)及び小学生(3年生75名、6年生80名)である。小学生の2群のそれぞれ半数ほどはピアノ演奏の基礎的技能(バイエル終了程度)は習得していたが、以下の分析では音楽経験による有意差はなかった。参加者の反応が演奏者の意図と一致した場合に1点を与えて15演奏分合計し、年齢要因の一元の分散分析を行った結果、小学生の正答数は幼稚園児よりも有意に高かったが、3年生と6年生の間は有意な差がなかった。各演奏に対して参加者が選んだ反応の度数の合計を年齢別、長調・短調別に求めて年齢×演奏の分散分析を行なったところ、長調の曲では「楽反応」が「楽演奏」と「怒演奏」に対して多くなされ、2演奏の分化が十分でないことが示された。それに対して短調の曲では「楽反応」は「楽演奏」に対して分化してなされていた。「悲演奏」に対してはいずれの年齢においても「悲反応」が他の2反応より多かった。「怒演奏」に対してはいずれの年齢においても、「怒反応」が他の2反応より多かった。正答数の分析から、幼稚園児は小学生よりも解読の正確さの点でやや劣ることが明らかになったが、反応の分析結果は、幼稚園児であっても小学生と同様、演奏に対して分化した情動の解読を行っていることを示しており、小さな子どもであっても情動の解読について高い技能を持っていることが示唆された。
