本研究は、ノルウェーの写本蒐集家マーティン・スコイエン氏が数年前に購入したアフガニスタンのバーミヤン渓谷出土の仏教写本コレクションを調査し、それらに対する解読研究を行うことを目的としている。スコイエン・コレクションに含まれる写本類は、破片を含めて全体で約1万点以上にのぼるが、昨年度に引き続いて、本年度もオスロにおける現地調査を行い、ほぼすべての写本断簡のカラー複写を入手し、解読研究を行った。スコイエン・コレクションの重要性は、スタインやペリオ等の蒐集した中央アジア出土文献と異なり、直接的なインド文化圏、すなわち古代に仏教が栄えたガンダーラの地より現れた、初めての大規模仏教写本だという点である。同じようなものにギルギット写本もあるが、こちらにはそれよりはるかに古い時代の写本が数多く含まれている。また、カローシュティー文字による貝葉写本断簡も『大般涅槃経』を含めて約200点が見い出されたが、これまでのカローシュティー文字資料は樺皮か木簡であって、貝葉写本の発見は世界初である。研究代表者は、解読の終了した文献からそれらを出版する準備を進めていたが、その第1巻が平成12年末にオスロより他の研究者からの寄稿も含んで出版された。その中で研究代表者は、本研究の成果として『新歳経』と『勝鬘経』の梵文写本断簡を、ローマ字転写、校訂テキスト、対応する漢訳とチベット語訳、さらに英訳とカラー写真を付して出版した。
