旧ソビエトのアフガニスタン介入に始まる戦乱の影響を受けて、大量の仏教写本がアフガニスタンおよびパキスタンから発見され、世界の古写本マーケットに流出した。本研究は、そのような状況下でノルウェーのスコイエン・コレクションおよび我が国の蒐集家の入手したアフガニスタンのバーミヤン渓谷、あるいはパキスタンのギルギットで出土したと伝えられる仏教写本を調査し、それらに対する解読研究を行うことを目的としている。本年度に研究代表者は、前年度に引き続きノルウェーにおける現地調査を行い、写本断簡すべての写真複写を入手し、それに基づいて解読研究を継続した。また本年度は、スコイエン・コレクションの写本類と同じアフガニスタンのバーミヤン渓谷から発見され、現在は鎌倉のシルクロード研究所に保存されている写本類(平山郁夫コレクション)についても現地調査を行い、研究出版の許可を得て解読研究を行った。本年度研究の終了した文献中から、研究代表者は、我が国でも著名な大乗経典のひとつである『無量寿経』の断簡、および法蔵部教団に属する『舎利弗阿毘曇論』に関連する断簡を同じ資料の研究に従事しているヨーロッパの研究者と共同で出版した。
