The central hypothesis of the proposed project is that process-based hybrid models are required to be developed for improving the assessment (risk or remediation approach) of very large number of PC and contaminated sites. The hybrid models can be developed using some combination of existing modelling approaches (such as analytical, numerical, meshless-AEM etc). To test this hypothesis, the following four objectives are outlined in this proposal. 1. Identify, modify, or develop analytical and analytic element method (AEM) based models suitable for the development of hybrid models. 2. Identify methods for obtaining empirical functions and develop basis hybrid models with the inclusion of sufficient field complexities (e.g., heterogeneity) and source geometry. 3. Improve the developed hybrid models to include practical boundary conditions such as hydrogeological stresses (recharge and drainage). 4. Evaluate the developed hybrid models against available analytical and/or AEM models, more complex numerical models, and including synthetic and field data.
