A Contrastive Study on the deictis of Japanese and German fiction

The purpose of this project was to analyze the deictics in fiction written in Japanese and translated into German.Firstly, I made a classification of the deictics into two types: referential deictics and non-referential deictics. The former were further classified into deictics for which an act of pointing is obligatory (e.g. a certain usage of asoko or here) and those for which such an act is not obligatory or possible (e.g. watashi or now). The latter were further classified into deictics in which the deixis is related to the condition of usage e.g. iku, come, tai or kanashii and those in which the deixis is related to the semantic interpretation (e.g. modal expressions or interjections). A further type of expression called style expressions (e.g. idiolect or dialect) was referred to, which behave in a way similar to, but not exactly like deictics.Secondly, I made a classification of the components which constitute fiction written in Japanese in terms of the deictics classified above. The components were classified into narrator modality sentences and character modality sentences. The former were subdivided into sentences that describe the emotions of the characters and those that describe the narration. The latter were subdivided into three types: inner monologue, represented speech and the utterance. The examples used to stipulate the component types were also analyzed in relation to the German translations.
