平成13年度に調査字種として選定した「右左王上書必無方」に「馬隹」を加え、引き続き『往来物体系』(石川松太郎監修)から摘出し、筆順を読みとる作業を進めている。読みとりの精度の問題もあって、正確なデータとしての確定には至っていないが、平成13年度から現段階までで次の点が明らかになってきている。未確定の部分は引き続き調査を進めたい。1.筆順種の出現傾向は江戸期を通して一貫している。2.摘出した筆順種(1)右2通り(2)左2通り(3)王2通り(4)上2通り(5)書2通り(6)必4通り(7)無2通り(8)方2通り(9)馬2通り(10)隹2通り3.筆順種には、出現率90パーセントを超える中心となる筆順が存在する場合と、40パーセントから60パーセントの範囲で拮抗している場合とがある。母数が確定していないので、正確には言えないが、前者の場合の字種「王」「書」と、後者の場合の字種「無」はこの範囲にあると考えられる。4.筆順種の出現状況から判断すると、書風の違いによる筆順の違いは認められない。5.全体的に、筆順の機能「書きやすさ」「覚えやすさ」「読みやすさ」「整えやすさ」のうち「書きやすさ(速さ)」を優先した筆順傾向である。6.『往来物』には、明治期に見られる純粋な字義解釈的筆順種は出現していない。7.明治期の教科書・教授書等における複数筆順種から外れる筆順は存在しない。すなわち、現段階では明治期の楷書筆順としてほとんど受容されたと見ることができる。
