本研究は、「日本ならではの文字学習環境で身に付けられた運筆の順序が、楷書中心の書字環境に急速に変化した明治期以降の楷書筆順に影響を与え、行書系筆順として定着した」という仮説のもと、日本の楷書筆順を特徴づける行書系筆順が定着した過程について、江戸期の寺子屋で広く使用された往来物における運筆順序の分析を通して明らかにするとともに、通史的に解釈して筆順史に位置付けることを目的とする。２０２１年度末の段階で、調査対象とする往来物資料の収集・整理（当初計画「１」）、調査する字種の選定（当初計画「２」）は完了、往来物資料の行草体からの該当字種の抜き出しと運筆順序の抽出（当初計画「３」）は未完了であった。２０２２年度（延長年度）は、石川松太郎監修『往来物大系』全十巻（１９９２－１９９４）所収の往来物資料757点から当初計画の「２」で選定した全４０字種「飛 必 馬 長 門 無 右 左 有 書 臣 非 羽 兆 老 及 司 風 川 州 寒 隹 止 上 出 火 用 田 王 生 耳 取 坐 女 方 土 母 興 重 癶」を抜き出す作業をすべて完了した。該当字種から運筆順序を抽出する作業（当初計画の「３」）は完了するに至らなかったが、８割程度まで抽出することができ、楷書筆順との相関関係を分析する見通しが立った。また、２０２３年度（再延長年度）中に、楷書筆順との相関関係の分析、行書系筆順関連記述の精査、筆順史解釈の文脈への位置づけ（当初計画「４」「５」「６」）を完了させるべく、作業方針を立て直した。
