2001年9月10日より15日の間の4日間、茨城県つくば市(10,11日)と兵庫県神戸市(13,14日)の2カ所で「新田園都市国際会議2001」が開催された。この会議の開催主催者は、レッチワース財団・つくば市・神戸市・ウエストミンスター大学・神戸芸術工科大学により構成されており、後援者として、全国農協中央会・都市基盤整備公団・住宅生産振興財団・神戸21世紀-復興記念事業推進協議会・日本経済新聞社・神戸新聞社・常陽新聞社・毎日放送・日本建築学会・日本都市計画学会・農村計画学会・日本造園学会・日本不動産学会・芸術工学会・国際都市計画史学会(IPHS)・茨城県・兵庫県からの賛同が得られた。また、後援者・プレゼンターとして、本研究の研究分担者をはじめとする国内外研究機関から協力を得ることができた。研究代表者の研究室(神戸芸術工科大学・芸術工学部・齊木研究室)を国際会議実行委員会の事務局とし、Homepageを開設する事によりこの会議の情報を広く公開した。その結果、海外13カ国からの参加者も含み、延べ人数1,500人を超える参加者が会議に出席した。都市計画専門家をはじめ、つくば市神戸市の職員、及び、この国際会議をHomepageやつくば市・神戸市の広報誌により知った地域住民など、専門にとらわれない幅広い参加者により構成された。この国際会議によって、レッチワース財団の代表者や「田園都市」をはじめ「植民地都市」「ニュータウン」「田園郊外」都市計画や研究に携わる各国の研究者による議論の中で、正しく田園都市の実態を学ぶことができ、加えて現代のイギリスやヨーロッパの事例だけでなく、現代のアジアの居住環境の課題やアメリカのニューアーバニズムの実践者達の報告を議論の対象とする機会を得られた。「田園都市」を再考し、新しい姿「新田園都市」を模索するきっかけをこの会議から周囲に発信できたのはないかと期待している。
