项目摘要

本年度は英語における関係詞節と先行詞の定性の問題について考察した。A tulip that is yellowのような不定名詞の先行詞をとる関係詞節(以下「不定関係詞節」)では、関係詞節の限定機能よって先行詞の指し示す個体(チューリップ)の集合が一つにしぼられる。これに対して、The tulip that is yellowのような定名詞の先行詞をとる関係詞節(以下「定関係詞節」)では、先行詞はもともと唯一的なチューリップを指していて、関係詞節の限定機能が及ぶ余地がない。河野(2004)は独自に収集した実例にもとづいて、部分構造を含む関係詞節は不定関係詞節になると主張している。たとえば、^*The trucks each of which blocked the highway belonged to the independent truckers. (Fetta (1974))の非文法性は定名詞の先行詞the truckに帰されることになる。さらに、河野は部分構造を含む関係詞節のこのような特性は部分構造ではall of {^*books / the books}のようにof名詞が常に定名詞になるという、「部分構造制約」とは相いれない、"不可解な"特性であると結論づけている。筆者の行ったインフォーマント調査によれば、必ずしも部分構造を含む関係詞節が不定関係詞節に限られるわけではない。また、部分構造制約と先行詞の定性の問題は、実は直接関係しないという結論に達した。たとえば、a group of students all of whom have failed the testでは、先行詞は<グループ>のレベルを、関係代名詞は<メンバー>のレベルを指示しており、グループが不定名詞であっても、その構成員であるメンバーは定とみなせるので部分構造制約は満たされていると考えられる。

This year, we will examine the qualitative problems of antecedents in English.
