J・S・ミルの1830年代から40年代にかけての議論を、彼の文明社会(商業社会、商業文明)観と、そのような社会観を科学的認識に高めようとした彼の試みを、ブリテンの社会理論の伝統、より具体的には、18世紀のスコットランド啓蒙から19世紀初頭のイングランドのウイッグ思想家にいたる文明社会認識との関係を念頭におきながら、検討した。具体的には以下のような点を明らかにした。これまでしばしば指摘されながら詳細な検討がなされることの少なかった19世紀初頭の『エディンバラ・レヴュー』関係者との関係を研究し、両者に共通しているのは、文明と未開・野蛮という二分法的な枠組みや、それに基づく自らの商業社会の優越への確信、そして現代社会認識のための枠組みとしての商業社会という枠組みへの依拠であることを明らかにした。また、ミルは、フランス思想の影響を自覚的に受けながら、文明という概念のもとに社会理論を展開することになるが、中産商業階級によって主導される商業社会という現代社会理解は、18世紀のスコットランド啓蒙においてきわめて精緻な形でしめされ、19世紀初頭のブリテンにおいて広く共有される見解となっており、この点で、ミルの議論はきわめてブリテン的の伝統に棹差すものであった。さらに、歴史論に多大な関心をしめして、社会変動の理論の構築にきわめて意欲的であった1840年代のミルの議論を検討し、そこには、社会と政治の相関関係への着目、社会変動の要因としての社会的要因の重視、社会発展の段階論的枠組みの援用など、社会の歴史的変化の法則にたいするさまざまなアイデアが包括的に相互の連関が念頭におかれつつ展開されていることを明らかにした。なお、これらの研究成果は博士論文としてまとめた。
