本研究の目的は,実践的コミュニケーション能力の育成,特に異文化間コミュニケーション能力育成のための会話教材における「言語の使用場面」に対して,最新の研究からの知見である2つの破綻レベルに関して分析を実施し,得られた知見より新たな教材開発のための方向性を導き出すことであった。本研究では,日本人英語学習者の異文化間コミュニケーションにおける破綻を,語彙・文法等の「言語レベル」においてだけではなく,考え方・行動様式等の文化的規範に基づく「概念レベル」にも起因すると捉える。その上で,破綻の原因を学習者が学校で使用する教科書における「言語の使用場面」の選択に,そして教科書中に掲載されている会話例そのものにあるのではないかと仮説を立て,分析を行った。研究対象として,勤務校である岐阜工業高等専門学校を具体例とし,学生が中学校在学時において使用した教科書を調査した。そして調査結果を基に,各教科書で用いられた「言語の使用場面」に対して,「何が取り上げられているのか」及び「どのような会話例が取り上げられているのか」について分析した。結果として,各教科書に取り上げられている「言語の使用場面」には差異があること,並びに同じ場面に関する「会話例」にも差異があること,が明らかとなった。教育的示唆として,これらの差異を学習者は既に有していることを念頭に置いて,高等学校段階での授業を考えなければならないこと,等が得られた。
