Following is the summary of our study we conducted between 2004 and 2007.In 2004, we investigated basic allocations of retail institutions, organized digital data using GIS, reviewed our methodology, and surveyed related preceding researches. We chose the following areas for our study basing on the above-mentioned procedures:Atsubetsu-ku of Sapporo (Hokkaido), Ebetsu (Hokkaido), Hanno (Saitama) and Iruma (Saitama). In 2005, we investigated consumption behavior on the basis of 2006. We investigated a consumption behavior (a shopping place, shopping frequency, transportation) in 25 lines of products. In addition, we conducted investigations into the use of shopping districts and central town areas, he use of transportation and consciousness for regional activation. We distributed 7,367 questionnaires in total for the four areas, and we collected 40.5% of them, i.e., 2,982 responses. In 2006, we analyzed results of the consumption behavior investigation that we conducted in 2005.We performed analysis of consumers' trips using GIS (a geographical information system).Hence, we could perform the analysis that took account of geographical conditions, such as barriers and traffics. We also conducted some consideration from a point of regional plan studies such as the regional activation. We carried out some preparation for presentation for local residents, aiming to make our study useful for urban and regional planning and regional activation. We also conducted preparation for academic researchers.
