LABs are interesting from the viewpoint of not only lactate production itself but also for probiotics and functional materials production such as polysaccharides. We have huge variety of bio-resources in Asian region but most of those are not yet utilized for our life. For connecting Needs and Seeds, it is necessary to establish a researcher-oriented database and to collaborate each other based on the database, for Asian LABs researchers in academia and industries. Therefore in the present study, we surveyed the bio-resources of lactic acid bacteria (LABs) and constructed the database of LABs as well as Researchers.We visited Vietnam and Malaysia in 2004, Philippine, Mongol, Indonesia and Thai in 2005,in order to research the bio-resources and researchers concerning lactic acid bacteria and to ask them for collaboration for the present study. Moreover, to promote the understanding of the situation of lactic acid bacteria research in South East Asia, we invited 4 lactic acid bacteria researchers to lactic acid bacteria symposium held in annual meeting of the society of biotechnology, Japan in 2005. On the other hand, format for database was determined to summarize the huge data of strains and researchers concerning lactic acid bacteria. The database is now ready to access for browsing and registration via the internet with an address : http://bbs1.agr.kyushu-u.ac.jp/ALABDB/. In addition to the information from the South East Asia domestic data had been also registered to the constructed database. The strain data and researcher data registered in the database are Over 350 and 40, respectively, as the end of February 2006.
