项目摘要

平成19年度の研究は以下3点にまとめられる。(1)自己が自己について語るという「自伝」に特徴的な論理を、W.ジェイムズの議論から改めて哲学史上の問題として考えた。スペンサーへの批判にみられる、<思考すること>と<思考されたもの>は心の働きにおいて分かつことが不可能である、という議論を出発点にして、そのような心の理解が『宗教的経験の諸相』の叙述において具体的にどの結実しているのか、その把握に努めた。以上の観点からテクストを読むと、これまで素朴に自伝的性格と語られてきたこの著作は、哲学的な問題枠組みからみても「自伝」という概念の検討を迫る内容を有していることを理解し、「過剰信仰」というジェイムズ独自の用語が<信じられたもの>と<信じること>を不可分なものとしている点を整理した。(2)W.ジェイムズについて、哲学的研究ではその個人主義が、知識人史の研究では社会改革者としての姿が論じられてきたが、その思想のなかでのつながりを見いだすべく『多元的宇宙論』の再読を行った。個々の人間によるよりよい世界へ向けた改革のビジョンがいかに可能かを間うたこの著作では、個人の人格的な回復をめぐる問題が社会的ビジョンと直接的に結びけられている点を明らかにした。この成果の一部は、(1)の研究とあわせて、「プラグマティズムと善の増進-W.ジェイムズにおける「回復」と「改革」の関係」というタイトルで論文にまとめている。(3)A.ジェイムズの『日記』の翻訳、ジェイムズ家をめぐる伝記的な史料の研究を継続した。とりわけ、ジェイムズ家に関する伝記的な研究において、兄W.ジェイムズと妹A.ジェイムズの関係は、兄/妹、父/子という二者関係の理論に依拠してきた点を批判的に検討した。
