本研究は、近代日本の経済発展過程には、工場制工業に代表される、西欧からの技術移転に基づく「近代」的な産業発展とともに、必ずしも工場制をとらない中小作業場の発展が重要であったことを、都市小工業のケース・スタディを通じて明らかにした。その基盤には、業主と家族労働に担われた「小経営」を基盤とする生産組織の存在があり、それは西欧とは異なる発展経路の特徴を示すものであった可能性も、比較研究の中から指摘した。
