本研究は、建築家・堀口捨己(1895-1984)が自邸に遺した膨大な資料(図面・写真・蒐集書籍等)を整理しつつ、そこに窺える堀口の建築観や研究の背景について分析したものである。資料の総点数は4429点で、内訳は、図面(設計図)712点、1923年の外遊時に集めたものを中心とする洋書96点、写真2,199点、書翰717点、茶道関係資料705点であった。図面には、紫烟荘や双鐘居の設計図など貴重な原図が含まれ、洋書や写真からは、堀口が近代美術工芸やドイツ表現派・アムステルダム派などの新建築に強い関心を示していたことがわかる。書翰からは、戦前の堀口の多彩な芸術活動を支えた人脈を知ることができる。茶道関係資料は茶書と起こし絵図からなり、戦前の堀口の茶室研究・利休研究で使用された基礎資料が数多く含まれていることが確認できた。以上から、堀口自邸資料は数多くの新知見を与えてくれる貴重な資料であり、明治大学所蔵資料とあわせることで、かつて明治大学聖橋校舎にあった堀口捨己の資料の全体像を復元できるものといえ、今後の堀口捨己研究に大きく寄与するものとして、極めて貴重な資料と考えられる。
