Keiji Gotoh (1883-1919) was a famous architect and structural engineer in the 1910s and 20s in Japan. The drawings and documents together with books and sketches arranged and collected by him were handed down by his descendants without any academic research. With the permission from the descendants, the investigators first checked all of the items of them making a database of the collection. Through the research, it became clear that the number of the items is 7,434;items of his architectural works 203;his sketches, paintings and graphic designs 752;his collection regarding various themes 5,050;books and magazines 512;personal objects such as letters 445;others 188. Analyzing the materials, the investigators have made it dear that this collection is very important architectural historically because a)it spans almost all his career, b)it includes unknown facts which would cast a new light in studying his works, and c)it reveals the early history of introducing ferro concrete technology into Japan.Regarding a), the materials show us his aspects unknown to his researchers. For example, there are documents to show that he was good at mathematics since his childhood, and there are sketches arranged during his trip to Korea in 1915, which implies his interest at that time. Concerning b), some sketches allegedly arranged for his architectural works were found. They seem to be plans during his design study. They would give us information what he thought of during the design. For example. There are drawings for one of his famous works, Tokyo ward Court (1920). The designs shown in them were different from the executed one ; more lavish with a tower at the corner.Related to c), for example, there are photos to show structural models for the water tower in the Toyotama Penitentiary. These photos can tell us how he designed the structure.
