项目摘要

今年度も昨年度にひきつづいてアメリカ・ロサンゼルスでフィールドワークを行った。特に駐家庭の日本人児童が多数在籍する公立小学校4校において、学校内での相互作用における日本人児童の友情関係と「日本人性」の表出に注目しながら、授業時間・休み時間・ランチタイムの参与観察を行った。さらに今年度は学校外の環境にも着目し、母親の育児理念と実践、およびロサンゼルスの日本人コミュニティが、子どもの友情関係と民族アイデンティティ形成に大きな影響を与えているのではないかという仮説に基づいて、学校で観察した日本人児童の母親40名に対し、育児に関する半構造的インタビューを行った。計80時間以上のインタビューデータはすべてトランスクライブした後、ソフトウェアを利用したオープンコーディングを行い、分析メモを作成した。このほか、補足資料として日本人コミュニティに関する文書・資料を収集した。インタビューデータ分析の結果、日本人駐在家庭では子どもを日本とアメリカ両方の学校で通用するバイカルチュラル・バイリンガルに育てるため、「同時的育成(Simultaneohs Cultivation)」と名付けられる育児実践を行っていることが明らかになった。母親にとって日本人同士の連帯を促進することは同時的育成を達成する一つの重要な手段であり、日本人の母親たちが子どもも交えて密接に付き合う特殊な日常生活が、子どもたちの現地校における日本人性の表出に影響を与えていると考えられる。また、ロサンゼルスの日本人コミュニティでは様々な日本の文化的資源(本、文具や玩具など)が購入可能であり、子どもたちは親から買い与えられたこうした資源を巧みに活用して日本人仲間集団の境界を強化・緩和していることが、インタビュー・参与観察から明らがになった。これらの知見を元に、今後はロサンゼルスにおける日本人駐在家族を特異なトランスナショナル集団と位置づけた上で、その子どもたちの民族的アイデンティティ形成過程が他の移民・移住集団とどのように異なるか、また同じかという点を追究する必要がある。以上の分析内容は、アメリカ人類学会、比較国際教育学会の年次大会、およびカリフォルニア大学日本研究シンポジウムで発表した。
