In this2-year project, we aimed to evaluate the physical activity level in the Japanese elderly. We measured the total energy expenditure in elderly people ranging from early to late old age varying in the fitness level and state of health by the doubly-labeled water (DLW) method and evaluated the precision of, and problems with, various simplified methods. The items measured or investigated were : 1. Basic health information (1) Interviewing (state of health, history of diseases, state of physical activities, living environment, etc.) ; (2) Measurement of the blood pressure ; (3) Morphometry and body composition measurements (height, body weight, BMI, waist girth, body fat mass (calipers method), muscle mass (PhysionXP, Physion). 2. Metabolic parameters (1) Tbtal daily energy expenditure (DLW method); (2) Basal metabolism (on waking up in the morning, expired gas method). 3. Physical activity level measured by simplified methods (1) Acceleration activity meters (Matsushita and ICC, tri … More axial ; Suzuken, monoaxial) ; (2) Activity time survey (Koebnick's formula modified by the investigators for elderly people). 4. Diet (All food and beverages consumed during the DLW study period were recorded and photographed by the subjects, and nutritional values were calculated using Wellness 21(TopBusiness).In 2006,36 healthy elderly people (14 males and 18 females aged 64-87 years) were studied, and the energy expenditure (total energy expenditure, basal metabolism, PAL) of healthy Japanese elderly people and their daily activities affecting the total activity level were determined. In 2007, similar measurements and investigations were performed in 16 elderly people at a low fitness level (8 males and 8 females aged 68-98 years). Research over these 2 years provided data concerning the energy expenditure of Japanese elderly peoplevaryingwidely in ageand fitness level. Particularly, the activity level in elderly people was closely correlated with the non-exercise activity time(NEAT). Less
