With the development of the information and communication technology, a probe car system that collects traffic information from the vehicles cruising on the road network is attracting attention. Particularly, probe-vehicle system has many advantages ; e.g. the system can collect traffic information from all road sections where the probe-vehicle cruises, obtain various information such as vehicular acceleration and cruising route, and so on. However, it is necessary for implementation of wide-area probe-vehicle system to solve a lot of problems ; presentation of usability as traffic information and establishment of method for utilization and for effectively gathering information and provision of information. This research developed and investigated several technologies in response to above problems.First, to present a usability of probe-vehicle data as traffic intonation, the route guide system using the probe-vehicle data was developed. The result of competitive experiment with the nav … More igation systems in the market showed the superiority of utilization of probe-vehicle data. In addition, the effect of route guidance of the developed system was shown from the route guidance experiment in commuting situation. Second, various methods for effective utilization of probe-vehicle data were established. Especially, this research showed that probe-vehicle data enables us to analyze drivers' route dots behavior to the last detail, to vent/ the effects of coordinated signal control, to identify the common site of traffic accidents and the probe-vehicle data can be utilized for updating dynamic O-D matrices. Furthermore, this research examined that the efficiency improvement of the data collection. After clarifying that the probe data collection frequency has a significant influence on the implementation of the large scale probe system, several techniques for using infrequent probe-vehicle data were developed and the optimal location .problem of probe-vehicle was studied. A lot of problem for the implementation of a wide-area probe-vehicle system were solved by executing this research. Less
