乳幼児保育における母性意識の国際比較を、日・中・米・スウェーデンを対象に行ったものである。母性意識としては、政策が保育所拡大方向に変わっても日本においてはなお浸透している「3歳児神話」を中心に、ジェンダー意識、育児意識、0歳児集団保育意識においた。方法は、意識を捉えるため評定尺度による質問紙調査と、その意味を深めるためのフォ-カスインタビューの二つを重ね合わせて用いた。その結果、国間の有意差は見られたものの、4ヵ国を貫く因子は見いだせず、国による傾向というよりは、事項毎に異なること、また、質問紙への答えが同じでもその内実は全く異なり、文化・民族・制度との関わりの大きさが窺えた。
