早生樹植林木の成長(成長速度, 生育環境)と材質との関連性を調べた. その結果, 以下のことが知られた. (1)商業伐期に達した人工林では, どの樹種についても, 肥大成長速度は木部表面材質には本質的には影響を及ぼさない. (2)熱帯原産種や赤道熱帯地域に成育する樹種では, 木部材質の成熟(成熟材の形成)は一定の直径に達してから始まるが, 一方, 亜熱帯・温帯に成育する樹種では, 木部成熟は形成層齢に依存する傾向が強い. (2)南米に植栽されたユーカリグランディスの材質に及ぼす緯度区分の影響を調べたところ, 赤道に近い植林地ほど好ましい材質(低い成長応力, 高い密度, 低いあて材率)の木材を産出する, などがわかった.
