牒は、養老公式令によると、官人個人が諸司に宛てる文書式である。しかし、実際には令の規定から逸脱し、個人のみならず官司間文書として、上行・下行・互通など多種多様に用いられてきた。従来の研究は、これを唐制の影響と説明してきた。実際に中国の牒は、現存の唐公式令では官司内下行文書、宋代の『司馬氏書儀』では官司間の上行・下行・互通文書と規定される。しかし、日本の牒の実例は、発給者や機能・書式など中国の規定と必ずしも同一ではなく、日本令と藍本たる唐令の規定の違いなど疑問も残る。そこで本研究では、(1)日唐令文の分析から、大宝令と藍本たる唐永徽令の牒式条を復原する、(2)牒の特異性を明かにし、牒の本来的な機能とそこから派生した機能という視角から、牒の多様化について論じる、の2点を課題として考察した。その結果、(1)大宝令と唐永徽令の牒式は、養老令と同様に個人の牒の規定であること、(2)上行・下行・互通いずれの形式も取る点が牒の特異性で、これは本来の牒が官人個人から官司に宛てた文書で、その地位・所属によっていずれの形式も取り得る点に基因すること、個人の牒がその所属する官司の意志を伝える官司発給文書として用いられるなど、個人文書としての牒の柔軟性・利便性がその機能を拡大させ、多種多様な様式を派生させることになったと考えられることが判明した。このような機能拡大は日唐双方で見られるが、書式に鑑みるに、日本の官司文書の牒は唐制の直接の導入ではなく、個人文書の牒から日本独自に派生した可能性が高い。すなわち、公式令や唐制を藍本とする令規定や文書式であっても、日本的特質や独自性は見出し得るのであり、律令法や文書行政自体の特質と、日本的な特質とを意識して分析する視角が必要となる。
