项目摘要

本研究の目的は、主に19世紀ロンドンを舞台に、都市における人間と動物との関係の歴史的な変化を考察することである。人間が動物をどのように認識してきたか、社会のなかで動物がどのように扱われてきたかという問題を通して、動物についてよりよく理解すること以上に、動物を比較対象とした人間の自己認識や、動物がその重要な構成員だった社会のあり方を理解することを目指している。採用最終年度にあたる本年は、3年間の研究成果を公表するための準備に専念してきた。具体的には、単著London Zoo,1828-1859:Cultural Politics,Public Science and Animal Historyの原稿を書き進め、8割程度完成した。なお、最終的な史料の確認、分析等のため2010年2月と3月に、ロンドンのブリティッシュ・ライブラリとウェルカム・ライブラリにてリサーチを行った。原稿執筆以外には、2009年6月にロンドン歴史学研究所で行われたカンファレンスにおいて、'Animals in the Metropolitan Landscape:London,1820-1860'を発表した。この研究報告は、19世紀ロンドンの正負両方のイメージに動物の存在が大きな影響を与えたことを明らかにした。また、それに関連して、都市における人間と動物との関係が変化していたことも論じた。上記の通り研究を実施したこととあわせて、『史学雑誌』編集部の依頼により、「(書評)『チャリティとイギリス近代』」を執筆した。チャリティは広義には、社会的弱者の救済だけではなく、「公益」をなす理念、施設、実践を意味する。その意味で、これまで公共文化施設について研究してきた自分が、本書から得られたものは大きかった。
