本研究の目的は言語教育、特に英語教育において、同期型CMCを導入する際、重要とされる、システムのデザインやシステムの利用方法について考究することである。本研究は英語コミュニケーションスキル習得を支援するためのシステムの設計に焦点化している。これにより、英語コミュニケーション学習において、有効な学習システムの設計方法、対面授業との組み合わせ方法など、システム設計も含めたカリキュラム作成の指針を得ることができると考えられる。今年度は上記の目的を達成するために、教材統合型ビデオカンファレンスの有効性を下記の3つ観点から検証した。1:同期型CMCの比較において、英語学習パフォーマンスとシステムの特徴、学習者の主観的評価の関係性を分析し、検討を行った。具体的にはビデオカンファレンス、オーディオカンファレンス、映像つきテキストチャット、プレインテキストチャットの4つの同期型CMCを用いて、学習者に15分間の意思決定タスクを行ってもらい、アンケートによる主観評価と、ビデオ撮影による学習パフォーマンスに関するデータ収集を行った。結果、映像と音声が学習目標への意識向上と学習目標の遂行に関係していることが示唆された。2:ビデオカンファレンスシステムにおいて、自分の映像と相手の映像が表示されることによる、学習者の主観的評価、学習意識と学習パフォーマンスの関係性についてモデル化を行った。自分の映像表示の有無、相手の映像表示の有無のそれぞれ2条件を掛けあわせた4つのビデオカンファレスで比較を行い、映像の有無、学習者の意識、パフォーマンスの関係性を検討した。その結果、自分の映像と相手の映像が直接に表現利用に影響していること、また間接的に相手の存在感への意識へ影響することで表現利用意識が向上し、表現利用数が促進されるという関係性が明らかとなった。3:上記ビデオカンファレンスシステムを授業実践で評価を行い、実践利用への要点を検討した。実践した授業は2つのタイプがあり、1つは対面授業の場で教材統合型ビデオカンファレンスを使用する形態であり、他方は対面授業の補完的役割で、自宅など授業外で使用するブレンド形態で評価を行った。その結果、対面授業で使用した場合、積極的なコミュニケーション活動が行われ、学習目標の達成意識も確認されたが、対面での音声がビデオカンファレンスを通じて伝わる音声よりも先に伝わり、そのことが情意面であまり有効ではないことが指摘された。
