複数の国の看護学生をインターネット上で内容べースのプロジェクトでつないで英語学習の環境を作り出す試みに関し,それを言語学習プログラムとして充実した実践にするための運営のあり方について研究した。個別の作業として,(1)その言語学習上のメリットの特定と,(2)各国の教員間の協調を中心とする実践上の知見の蓄積,(3)学習者言語の分析を行った。(1)言語学習上のメリットに関し,正確さ(文法理解の確実さ)と流暢さ(一定時間内の言語産出量として測定)について学習者の伸びを測定した。その結果,正確さ及び流暢さ両方に伸びが見られたが,文法テストの平均値の伸び(t(98)=-1.99,p=.049)よりも,流暢さテストの平均値の伸び(t(98)=-6.85,ρ<.001)が大きいことが観察された。アンケートの回答での学習者の主観的評価もこの観察を裏付けるものだった。(2)教員間の協調に関しては,客観的条件をどのように乗り越えられるかが課題だった。実際には,ある国の担当者が体調を崩したり,ある国では大学教員のストライキが学期中続いたりなどの事態が生じた。教員間の協調は,スケジュールを早い段階で共有することで効率性を増すことができた。(3)学習者言語の特徴としては,電子フォーラムを用いた実践では,参加者の言語使用が書き言葉よりも話し言葉の特徴をよく示すことが見出された。(1)の結果から,学習者の自律性を重んじる共同学習プログラムは,流暢さを伸ばす言語学習の場となりやすい傾向があるといえる。しかし,教師の支援次第で,言語知識を伸ばす形での展開の可能性はあると考えられる(語彙学習など)。(2)の点について,不測の事態を回避する処方箋はないが,参加者数を増やすことはリスクの軽減になると考えられる。(3)の結果から,学習者がよく使う発話行為を事前に特定し,表現の幅を広げる指導の可能性が考えられる。
