While Japan is faced with rapid decline in population and increase of energy costs, we analyze those effects on the population distribution over urban area or regions. It is found that agglomeration could be occurred by the higher transport cost, yet population declines tend to bring dispersion of population. If agglomeration happens, the social welfare depends on the scale of the area. Therefore, too much compactness of cities deteriorates the welfare in equilibrium.

在日本面临人口急剧减少和能源成本上升的情况下，我们分析了这些对城市地区或地区人口分布的影响。研究发现，交通成本的增加会导致城市的集聚，而人口的减少会导致人口的分散。如果发生集聚，社会福利取决于地区的规模。因此，城市过于紧凑会恶化均衡状态下的福利。
