植物細胞の中で光合成を行う葉緑体は盛んにタンパク質も作っている。そこで、葉緑体で有用タンパク質を生産する試みがなされたが、必ずしも成功しなかった。このことは、葉緑体のタンパク質合成の機構が動・植物の細胞質や細菌の機構とは違っていることを意味する。本研究で、葉緑体でのタンパク質合成にはメッセンジャーRNAの上流部分のみならずタンパク質のアミノ酸配列を規定する部分の一部も必要なことを明らかにした。
