A Study on the Modern Reception of Shakespeare from the Viewpoint of Cultural Representations

Shakespeare's work and its study are both the products of the modern Europe, which has also produced the critical trend of "Eurocentrism." It follows that such trend is a manifestation of the structure of self-reflexivity intrinsic in the modern European culture. The present study is an attempt to clarify such structure through the analysis of Shakespeare's work, making use of the thematic problematics such as secularization, nature and difference, each of which has a corresponding discipline and a frame of reference to religious cultures. The analysis shows the peculiar nature and structure of Shakespeare's reception in the "modernized," i.e., non-Western cultural sphere.
