枯草菌の細胞分裂と呼吸に関わる遺伝子に着目し、細菌がもつ効率的なエネルギー戦略の解明を行った。機能未知であった転写因子YofAが細胞分裂に関与し、分裂装置を構成するFtsWの遺伝子の転写を促進することを明らかにした。さらに、この因子は培養液の栄養状態を感知し、細胞分裂を促進させる役割を持つことを示した。一方、増殖・分化に必須な呼吸酵素であるNADH脱水素酵素をコードすると考えられたNdh, YumB, YutJの遺伝子を解析し、いずれもこの酵素としての役割を持つことを示した。
